In a large saucepan on medium-high heat, add the oil and saute the onion until it is translucent (about 7 minutes). Stir in the garlic and saute for just a minute to bring out its aroma.

Add the basil, salt and sugar and stir.

Then add the butter and melt.

Next, add the can of crushed tomatoes and the water and lower the heat to medium-low/low and let it simmer.

Let it simmer with the lid on for at least 10 minutes. You can let it simmer for up to an hour on low.

The longer it simmers, the longer time the sauce has to meld the flavors together. But, if you are in a pinch for time, the 10-minute mark still tastes great!

This easy pasta sauce recipe gives you a slightly chunky sauce with texture. If you prefer a smooth textured pasta sauce, simply use a blender or hand blender to puree the sauce to your desired consistency.

Additionally, you may add small amounts of water to thin out the sauce if it is too thick for you. If you do this, check on the flavor and adjust it with salt and pepper.

Notes

What if I want a smooth pasta sauce?
The consistency of this pasta sauce is slightly chunky. If you prefer a smooth pasta sauce, put the finished pasta sauce in a blender and puree it. You can also use a hand blender or immersion blender to puree the sauce to a smooth consistency.
What if I want a thinner sauce?
If you prefer a thinner sauce, add small amounts of water and adjust the end result with salt and pepper.
This pasta sauce should be simmered for at least 10 minutes but can be simmered for up to an hour. *Note: The longer it simmers, the thicker it will get. Therefore, you may thin out the pasta sauce towards the end of the simmering phase, if preferred.

I never thought to make my own pasta sauce until I ran out of jarred sauce and needed to make do with what I had at home. Luckily I had a jar of crushed tomatoes and that’s where your recipe came in so handy. I followed the steps and, wow, I made my own pasta sauce! I used it in a vegetarian lasagna and it tasted even better than the jarred stuff. It’s a keeper!
