I’ve made tubs of tzatziki yogurt sauce in my life. That’s because I grew up in a household where yogurt accompanied most meals. I’ve made plenty of variations of yogurt dips to spruce up the flavor including yogurt sauces with garlic, shallots, cucumbers, mint, herbs, etc., etc.

This tzatziki recipe, though, is my go-to for a yogurt dip and sauce that’s the perfect accompaniment to so many dishes like chicken kabob, roasted vegetables, or any Mediterranean or Middle-eastern meal.

This post is about how to make a simple and delicious tzatziki yogurt sauce.

Can I make any substitutions?

Yes! You can make substitutions for most of the ingredients. For instance:
  • Cucumber: You can substitute an English or American cucumber for the Mediterranean cucumber if you don't have one or you cannot find one in your local market. Just be sure to grate enough to make about a 1/2 cup.
  • Garlic salt: Feel free to substitute the garlic salt for one clove of fresh garlic (minced) and 1/4 teaspoon of salt.
  • Mint: If you do not have fresh mint on hand, you can use 2 teaspoons of dried mint instead.

I made this recipe last week. It was by far, the best tzatziki sauce I’ve had. The mint, for me, really added the flavor I was looking for. I used it with the beef puff pastry recipe, had plenty left over and I’ve been using it on some grilled chicken as well.
